These pair of vintage Scottish paperweights look so nice together - that I decided to list them as a pair.
They are both made by Selkirk Glass in the Scottish Borders and have early Selkirk glass labels on the base.
Selkirk Glass was set up by Peter Holmes and Ron Hutchison in 1977. Peter Holmes left in 2002. The company sadly closed in 2006 - so these beautiful weights are no longer being made.
This multi-coloured speckled weight is an early one and is dated on the base 1983. So it was made only a few years after the company was founded. The main body of the weight is clear green coloured glass - and inside is a ball of speckled plain colour and melted canes - which form the decoration.
This early one shows that Selkirk Glass paperweights of this time were trying to move away from more conventional forms of millefiori canes and lampwork. The company instead looked towards producing more abstract works based on astronomical, meteorological or naturalistic themes.
The second weight on offer also has pretty green and blue colours - and dated 1992 it shows how the Selkirk style has now been firmly established - it is more delicate in finish than the earlier one. The base looks like waves on the sea - with air bubbles creating a sea form on the choppy waves. There is a large bubble on the centre of the base - and another one - like a large silver pearl - rises into the centre of the weight - a halo of tiny bubbles circles the big bubble - it must have taken a lot of skill to make this. Peter Holmes was still at Selkirk at this time - and although it is not signed - the quality suggests that it might have been made by him.
Both have a height of 2 1/4 inches and a diameter of 2 3/4 inches.
The quality of the weights is reflected in my asking price for the pair - I am listing them at £25 each.
