This is one of a selection of vintage Scottish paperweights which I am listing in my shop - all with very fair prices attached to them.
This one was made by Selkirk Glass in the Scottish Borders. It is an early weight and has an etched inscription on the base and dated 1981 - so not long after the company was founded. Although not signed by Peter Holmes - it is very typical of his work at this time.
Selkirk Glass was set up by Peter Holmes and Ron Hutchison in 1977. Peter Holmes left in 2002. The company sadly closed in 2006 - so these beautiful weights are no longer being made.
It has a height of 2 inches and a diameter of 2 3/4 inches. The weight unpacked is 360 grams.
It is a very pretty little weight - with a single lampwork flower (Clematis) in the center - the flowerhead is a daisy type with purple petals - and it is surrounded by a halo or green leaves on a stem with two green leaves at the bottom. The ground colour is a semi-translucent plum colour. it has lots of little random pinprick size air bubbles in the ground - which look a little crystalized when it is photographed. Surrounding the central flower to the edge is a decorative ring of tiny millefiori canes.
It is in good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. The plum ground seems to slope slightly - so it perhaps should not be considered as a perfectly made specimen - but it is made by a glass maestro and is highly collectible now. It displays well in your collection - and has been priced at a low price to these little issues in the making into consideration. Please look at all my photographs to check the condition.
