hese are two interesting pieces of Art Glass designed by TAUNO Wirkkala. They date to the 1960s,
Tauno Wirkkala was the brother of Tapio Wirkkala, the world-famous designer. Although he is the lesser known sibling this is a stunning piece of design.
We have on offer two pieces of Northern Lights or Aurora designs - a glass bowl and a plate. They were made for the "Revontulet" or "Northern Lights" series (Humppila, Finland). "Revontulet" is the Finnish word for the Aurora Borealis. It means firefox which is based on the local myth that the Aurora is a reflection of the fur of a mythical creature. They are both very fine sculptural pieces - and the random shape of each piece was made to resemble the burst of light seen from the Borealis in Finland.
The base of each item is a treacly brown shade (resembling the colour of a fox) and this gradually changes to a more golden amber shade. These pieces of 1960s Finnish glass will look stunning in a Scandi-modern interior or on your G-Plan bureau or desk.
The shallow bowl is signed on the ring on the base, the larger more upright bowl is unsigned. I have these priced with a very fair price for the pair - at £75 for the larger bowl and £75 for the signed shallow dish or bowl. As you can see in my photographs, both are in perfect condition with no damage.
Dimensions: The shallow bowl has a diameter of 11 3/4 inches. It is 2 inches in height and weighs 730 grams. The taller bowl is 9 inches in diameter with a height of 4 3/4 inches. It is 930 grams in weight.
