This is a highly decorative piece of Scottish Art Pottery. It probably dates to the 1920s or 1930s. It is decorated by one of the Scottish Lady Decorators or Painters.
At this time, local Scottish potteries in Glasgow and ones in Edijburgh such as Bough or Makmerry engaged ladies to hand decorate blank pieces made by larger factories or firms. The blanks are not usually marked but you often find the monogram or name of the lady artist painted on the base. Here we have the monogram: GLA. This might be the initials of the painter or it might be short for Glasgow.
This is a lovely miniature cheese dome - which would be fabulous today for serving up rounds of Camembert or similar smaller cheeses. The decoration is just glorious - with a whole array of large yellow flowers and smaller pink blooms on the exterior of the lid - with the green leaves draping around the sides. Below - the same pattern is repeated on the plate section. The plate has a groove near the edge - so that the dome does not slip off.
The cheese dome is in lovely vintage condition. The knop is intact and not broken or restored. There are generally no chips or cracks. There is no staining to the plate section from any historical use,
Dimensions: the plate is just under 6 1/2 inches in diameter. The top dome section is 1 3/4 inches in height (including the knop is 2 inches). The diameter is just under 5 inches.
I have taken a few images for your inspection. It is a unique piece of old Scottish Art Pottery - very functional, with fine hand-painted decoration and in excellent condition. My asking price is certainly a fair one - you wont find another like it.
