This is a very attractive hand-painted large jug or pitcher dating to the early 20th century and made by Bough pottery.
The jug has been beautifully decorated by Richard Amour, as initialled on the base - and dated 1922 - so now nearly 100 years old.
The main body colour is a beige-white tone - with bands of deep midnight blue top and bottom.
There is a frieze of hand-painted deep red apples on the bough of the tree - and this stunning design runs all the way around the whole of the jug.
Marked on the Base - 385 “Bough” R.A. (for Richard Amour) and dated 1922.
It is in good condition for its age - with no major chips or cracks - the handle is free from damage or repairs - and no chips to the spout. There is the usual fine crazing to the glaze as found on Bough pieces of this age - but certainly not very pronounced at all on this piece. The only issue is a short and very fine hairline to the rim - which I have taken in extreme close-up... you can hardly see it on display. This is taken into consideration with my pricing. If perfect I would have had it at £165. I have reduced this price by over a third.
Nice Large Size - Height 5 inches and with a diameter of 5 1/2 inches. From spout to handle - it is 7 1/4 inches. It is 500 grams in weight.
Bough Pottery was founded by Elizabeth and Richard Amour in the 1920s. They specialized in decorating blanks - which they bought in from pottery companies in England and Scotland (many from Maling Pottery, Newcastle).
This pretty mug made by Elizabeth's brother, Richard. He lived from 1900 to 1949.
It is in good condition with no nasty chips or cracks, just the very faint hairline to the rim, as photographed in my last two images on the listing.
Interest in Bough pottery has been of particular interest of late -and my asking price here reflects this renewed interest in the pottery as well as the rarer large size of this piece and the quality of the painting.
