Aren't these little vintage Studio Pottery Owl Pots just adorable ?
The are both marked on the base "Traquair" - which indicates that they had been made at the old pottery based in the stables at Traquair House in the Scottish Borders.
Traquair House is the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. It has been lived in for over 900 years and was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland.
It has had an active community of craft workers in the grounds since 1974 when Flora Maxwell Stuart decided to turn some of the outbuildings around the house into workshops for self-employed craft workers.
Today Traquair House is well-known for its craft brewery. It was also a pioneer of micro-brewing in the 1970s. It's dark ales are now exported all over the globe.
My wee pots are not dated but historically and stylistically them must date to just after 1974.
They are tubular in shape and great as little holders for pens, kitchen utensils, drinking straws, toothbrushes, etc.
The have applied clay details to give an impression of feathers - the larger darker one - has added texture in the form of a bubbling lava glaze. Some of the little ceramic bubbles of the lava have popped in the kiln. I have taken close up images of all details.
The little owl pots are all handmade and unique items of Scottish Art Pottery. They are in good vintage condition with no damages.
Dimensions: The owl with the darker base section and the lava glaze is 5 1/2 inches in height and has a diameter of about 3 1/2 inches. The smaller owl with the cream coloured face is 5 inches in height with a diameter of 2 3/4 inches.
