This is a cute wee vintage Scottish silver brooch - now 50 years old!
It is called a Luckenbooth brooch. A Luckenbooth brooch is a Scottish heart-shaped brooch. These often have a crown above one heart or two intertwined hearts. They are typically made of silver and some may be engraved or set with stones.
The Luckenbooth brooch is a traditional Scottish love token and was often given as a betrothal or wedding brooch. One legend of the Luckenbooth brooch is that it was a symbol of love and devotion given by Mary Queen of Scots to Lord Darnley.
These brooches have a continued historic interest - and are still popular in Scotland until more contemporary times.
This wee one has an Edinburgh hallmark and the letter "S". This is the letter used in 1973. It also has the maker's initials: DJE
The wee brooch comes in its original 1970s white plastic box - for the retailer: R.L Christie - who had a large prestigious jewellery shop just off the top of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. The original little leaflet describing the brooch is also still in the box. All items are in good condition.
It is a finely made simple vintage example of a Luckenbooth brooch - and is priced accordingly. It would look good as a wee embellishment on a black cashmere sweater or jacket lapel.
It measures: the height of the brooch is 3.6 cm. At its widest, it is 2.8 cm. It has a C- safety ring closure on the back - and a nice pin. Good vintage condition with no damages. It is listed at a fair price for a vintage piece of hallmarked Scottish silver.
