This is an original mid-century BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) fine litho-printed travel poster.
It is not a reproduction - and has been beautifully printed, as issued. There are no dots or pixelation present on the surface of the print when viewed through a magnifying glass - reproductions have a mesh of coloured dots making up the image as photographic copies. The paper surface is matt and does not have a modern sheen. The colour is deep and uniform over the whole surface of the poster. All the details are nice and crisp with no blurring, that you often find on larger reproductions.
It is in excellent condition and has the words: Printed in Great Britain along the bottom margin and the issue number 57/833. The poster sheet is a Double Crown and measures 76 cm x 50 cm (30 x 20 inches, below the window mount edges).
Frame Size is 95.5 x 68 cm.
It is certainly a most vibrant and lively poster and in a style typical of the 50s and very much a tourist's vision of Scottish culture. The film Brigadoon with released in 1955 and this also fostered the idea of Scotland being the land of tartan and shortbread!
All the same, it is certainly a harder to find poster - perhaps they did not issue such a large print run for a Scottish market. You do find a lot of modern reproductions of this poster (in a variety of sizes) as it remains a popular nostalgic image. But original 1950s issues - well, you just don't see them that often.
The poster features abstracted forms of three Scotsmen in their distinctive red Royal Stewart tartan kilts undertaking the Sword Dance. I love that the swords are made up of the trails coming from the BOAC airplanes flying towards Scotland.
My poster is in fabulous vintage condition with no signs of damage or fading. It is framed in a more contemporary heavy black wooden frame and ready for you to hang on your wall. I have had to take some of my photographs through the glass of the frame - so it has been rather difficult to photograph. All the colours are nice and vibrant.
The British Overseas Airways Corporation / BOAC was the British state airline created in 1940-1946 as the result of a merger, merging again in 1971-1974 to create British Airways / BA.
