It has an applied signature on the inside of the base: Etling France. Etling was a Parisian gallery noted for innovative designs and are highly desirable collector's items in glass and bronze.. This bowl was designed by Lucille Sevin.
Lucille Sevin was a French sculptor active during the 1920s & 1930s. She was known for her opalescent glass sculptures in the Art Deco style and created several works for Éditions Etling, a prominent Paris- based art glass publisher. She was a student of the sculptor François-Léon Sicard (1862–1934) and was active as an artist from 1920 to 1940.
Sévin was famed for her sculptures of dancers in milky satin-finished, iridescent glass, such as Isadora from 1925. Her glass creations were produced for Etling at the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks. Her glassworks were certainly representative of the ‘Etling style’. For a time, Sévin served as the company’s art director. Her husband, the sculptor Jean Théodore Delabassé, also worked for Etling.
She exhibited at the Salon of the Société des Artistes Français in Paris and became a member of the Society. Lucille Sévin won the bronze medal in 1932 and the gold medal at the 1937 Paris Universal Exposition. She also exhibited her works at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
The Etling Company was founded by Edmond Laurent Etling, and was based in Paris at 29, Rue de Paradis. They sold high quality exclusive decorative items during the 1920's and 1930's. The company is perhaps better known today for their glass, and they commissioned items in a range of materials - which were sold in their Rue de Paradis shop.
Glassware was made at the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks on the outskirts of Paris. Etling glass was known for its pale blue opalescence as you might also find in pieces by Lalique and Sabino. Etling closed in 1940 during WW2.
This bowl is a hard to find, rare hexagonal shaped pedestal vase with a series of moulded tortoise around the plinth base. There are a total of six cute tortoises or turtles.
It certainly is such an amazing piece of glass - and will be so fabulous on display in a high-end Deco interior. The craft in the making this piece is certainly most astounding.
The main body section is more like you might find on a bowl. It is made up of six thick angular panels of glass - all of which are bevelled at the edges. The decoration on each of these panels consists of busy pressed floral patterns. These cover all of the surface - apart from sharp diamond sections on each side which are polished clear and are without pattern. It is very dynamic.
To really gild the lily, Etling has set the body section on a thick square plinth - and added lots of little turtles or tortoises sitting on their back legs and holding up the bowl. It is a surprise when you look at them - as it is only on close-up that you see they are wee creatures! how totally sweet!
The glass is clear but all very opalescent with a subtle lustre. The main body is clearer so that you can see the decoration on each panel through the light. The little tortoises are very opaque so you can see the details of their wee faces and the texture on their shells.
What an amazing piece. It is in excellent condition with no nasty chips, cracks or rubbing / scratching to the interior. I have taken lots of images for your inspection - but rest assured it looks to much better in "real life". The rarity of this piece and its fine condition are reflected in my asking price.
Dimensions: The main body is 11 3/4 inches wide. The width is 8 inches. The height is 4 inches. The overall height of the glassware is 6 3/4 inches. The plinth or foot is 4 3/4 inches x 3 1/2 inches. The base also has the Etling mark below.
It is a heavy piece of glass and unpacked it is 2.3 kg in weight.
