This is a fine antique pottery figurine made at one of the Staffordshire Potteries and probably dates to the late 19th century or early 20th Century.

It features a Scottish Newhaven fishwife. She is shown in her traditional costume. This consists of a heavy petticoat and overdress which is often hitched up. The lady wears a scarf or shawl around her head. This figurine shows a simple single figure standing on an oval-raised grassy bank. She has a bucket or basket full of fish at her side.

These fishwives figurines are always an attractive and much sought-after subject. This one is not so highly coloured - and the figure is mainly white - with hand-painted colours applied to only the lady's face and shoes. There are little gold highlights here and there. There is a large airhole on the reverse - this is there to release air from the model in the kiln. The figurine is well-modelled and is a harder one to source. My asking price is a fair one for such a pretty one.

This figurine is in good antique condition. It dates to the 1880s. It is a genuine antique piece - and most definitely NOT a later reproduction.

It has no chips or cracks. There is a little blue blemish near the front base section (done in the making) but that is the only issue with this example. The figure has a clear grey-blue tinted glaze which is more unusual on these models. The overall general blueish tint to the figurine has been caused by the addition of lead to glaze. The addition of lead to glass and paperweights at this time - also created a grey tint to the finished products.

My little figurine is 10 inches in height and has a width of 4 1/2 inches. The depth is 2 3/4 inches.

UK POSTING ONLY - this will be £4.95 for Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. This will be applied at check-out.
