This is an interesting antique coin bank or money box - it dates to the middle / end of the 19th century.
The bank is made of ceramic / earthenware - and was made in one of the Staffordshire potteries.
It takes the form of a little fireside spaniel or "Wally Dug". Originally - you would have had two full-size spaniel dogs on each side of your mantlepiece - and these were very popular with the Victorians. This is a quirky play on these models.
These lovely little Victorian money boxes were crudely made, cheaply mass-produced items and most have irregularities, knocks and smudges in the clay and glaze because of the speed of manufacture and so examples vary in quality quite considerably. This one seems to be of better quality - with finer modelling to his features and more definition to his fur.
I have two of these little treacle glaze dog's head money boxes or banks in my store. This is has more of a dark brown glaze - and has a little rough firing hole or firing blemish on the back, as photographed. It is generally though without damage - the money slot on the top of his head is without chipping etc. There are three little "stilt" marks on the base - where the model was stacked on stilts in the pottery kiln.
These little spaniel dog banks are much more difficult to find.
This wee fellow displays well - and is in a fairly good condition commensurate with age and use.
He is made of darker terracotta clay that has been covered in a rich shiny treacle colour Rockingham glaze (you are looking at an original antique example and not a modern reproduction!). The glaze is very dark and shiny - and this has made it a little tricky to photograph as well as I would have liked.
Dimensions: The height is 3 1/4 inches and the width is 3 3/4 inches.
