n sale here is an interesting and very large Staffordshire figure representing: Colonel Peard (1811 - 1880). He is often paired with a matched figure of Garibaldi - but sadly I don't have this one in stock at the moment.
John Whitehead Peard was a British soldier, renowned as 'Garibaldi's Englishman'. Peard worshipped Garibaldi and followed him to Sicily with other English volunteers known as the Excursionists, to fight alongside the charismatic Italian leader.
Peard had an important role in 1860 during the Expedition of the Thousand, where he acted as Garibaldi's "double", and in doing so bewildered the enemy and instigated their retreat from Salerno and later from Naples. Peard was awarded by King Victor Emmanuel II with the cross of the Order of Valour
The figure is about 15 1/2 inches in height. Colonel Peard is in excellent antique condition with no damages or restorations. I cannot believe that the horse's long and delicate legs have not been damaged. Shredded clay decoration underneath the front leg of each horse. The paintwork is minimalistic - with some gilt details to add interest. There is a very tiny firing crack just under the letter "E" on the title of the figurine - I have photographed this in extreme close-up for your inspection. You probably won't find a nice example than this one!
Given the exceptional size and condition of this figurine - it is listed here at a very reasonable price. Perfect if you have a Garibaldi one and wish to complete your pair.
Sadly - I would probably one be able to post in the UK. I will have to carefully pack and send to you with Parcelforce24 postage - this will be capped by us at £10 and applied to your order at the checkout.
Like all my Staffordshire figures in my Iconic Edinburgh online store - these are sold as genuine 19th-century issues and are NOT modern reproductions. This one is sold to you guaranteed as dating to 1860s.
