This is another large Staffordshire figure of the Scottish hero, Rob Roy. It is not so elaborately painted as my other one on my website - and it is mainly white with gold highlights (some rubbed). The skin has pale pink colouring. More minimal colouring was more in use towards the end of the 19th century - so this one must date to the 1880s. There is a more highly coloured one in the collection of the National Trust at Attingham Park, Shropshire.
It is an antique 19th century figurine taking the form of Rob Roy MacGregor (1671 - 1734).
HISTORY: Rob Roy was a celebrated Scottish Jacobite, an outlaw and folk hero known as the "Scottish Robin Hood". He was born in the Highlands and was a skilled cattle dealer, then reiver and fugative who fought for the Stuart cause. He fought in the Jacobite Rebellions. He did not die on the battlefield but had a long life passing peacefully at his home and and was laid to rest in Balquhidder Kirk. His life was spent in the Trossachs and Loch Lomond area, now often called "Rob Roy Country". He was immortalised by Sir Walter Scott in his 1817 novel "Rob Roy" and many engravings survive of actors in a similar pose to this figurine who are playing the hero on the stage.
This figurine reflects the Victorian interest in all things Scottish. It is more statuesque than my other more lively example. He is shown standing beside a rocky bank. He rests his shield on top of it. The shield is decorated with a large raised thistle pattern. The warrior is wearing a bonnet with three large feathers to the front. He has a wide sash over his tunic jacket. He wears long socks up to his knee. He wears a kilt with a badger-head sporran on top. His face and hair are painted and the modelling of his features is fine. He will look good on display in an interior featuring a more monochrome colour palette. The minimalistic colour on my figurine is reflected in my lower asking price.
My model is not a modern reproduction and is sold as being a 19th century creation. It is in good condition with no damages.
