This is a very attractive and harder-to-find Victorian Staffordshire figurine, which dates to about the 1860s / 1870s
It is a genuine 19th Century example and in antique damage-free condition. It is a not so much of a flatback - as it is very much modelled in the round.
This one is a rarer subject and it is certainly an rater large one coming in at 14 1/4 inches in height (to the top of his feather on the gentleman's cap).
The model shows a gamekeeper or gardener dressed in his rather dapper Scottish country attire. The gamekeeper stands resting his foot on a little bridge over a stream. He wears a bonnet with twin feather plumes in it. He wears a green jacket crossed by a long plaid sash. Oh! my... his little pink briches.. he must have looked quite the dandy on his country walk. He has white silk stockings and little black pumps.
Behind him we can see a spade - and to the left a plant with pink flowers in a yellow basket. He may have been potting up the plant and giving it some eater from the stream. He looks very pleased with his efforts and strikes quite a jaunty pose. There are some little patches of bocage here and there on the model.
Pugh has suggested that the subject of the figurine is the poet, Robert Burns.
It is apparently undamaged condition (I cant believe those feathers on the cap have survived with no damages for over 100 years). The figurine is so beauifully modelled and it reallylooks quite stunning on display. The applied colours are all lovely and bright. The previous owner has applied some green felt to the base to stop the model stratching your furniture. Please ask if you would like this removed.
The condition, large size and the sheer attractiveness of the subject is reflected in my asking price.
Overall height is 14 1/4 inches.
