This is an attractive large jug or pitcher by Terry Bell Hughes. It has his impressed stamp on the base.
The jug was probably made when he was at the Wren Pottery Studio in Surrey in the 1970s. It is made of a rich beige stoneware - and has a lovely shape flaring out gently towards the base. It has a thick ribbon handle. At the neck of the pitcher there are applied glossy glazes - with a pale grey at the top, then a rust brown colour and over all this is a dark treacle glaze. This has been very liberally applied with a brush and so much glaze has been added that it has been allowed to run in long raised drips down towards the base. It is all very painterly - and would make a great addition to your collection of Welsh Studio pottery. Listed at a far price for such a large piece of Hughes Pottery - time to bag a bargain!
It is in good condition with no chips or cracks and no crazing to the glaze. The potter's mark on the side, as photographed.
It is a nice substantial piece measuring 12 3/4 inches in height. The rim is 3 1/2 inches and the base is 6 3/4 inches.

SHORT BIOGRAPHY: Terry Bell Hughes was born in 1939 in Aberele in North Wales. He trained at Harrow School of Art where he met his wife, Beverley-Bell Hughes. At Harrow, he trained after Victor Margrie and Mick Casson, focusing on functional pottery. After a period working at Oxshott in Surrey, with Denise and Rosemary Wren, they moved to Llandudno Junction in North Wales where they both now live and work.
His work is primarily in thrown, high-fired domestic pots, reflecting influences from both Oriental and British country ware. In 1976 he was one of six potters commissioned by the Welsh Arts Council to make work for the Aberystwyth collection. He is a member of the Craft Potters Association.
Hughes is one of Wales’ most celebrated potters his work is in many prestigious collections, including Amgueddfa Cymru: National Museum Wales, The Royal Museum of Scotland, Ulster Museum and the Crafts Council in London.
