These vintage British wall masks or wall pockets are always popular items for decorating the Art Deco home.
They date to the 1930s and are made of a porcelain material. The front of the mask is painted and then coated with a high glossy glaze. The back is always unfinished with a bisque texture, and has an impressed issue, and manufacturers' mark.
They are good quality items - and I love the bright colours. This one was made by Cope & Co and shows an Art Deco Lady with wavy chestnut hair cut short. She wears a little green hat on top of her head and has lilac beads. Cope and Co. seem to like using these colours. She has plum-coloured lipstick. She is very 1930s in look with her black eyeliner and eyebrows finely plucked into an arch shape.
My wall mask is in excellent condition with no damage. The glaze is generally nice and glossy. There is some very fine craquelure to the clear glaze on the face - this is a common occurrence on these old wall pockets. You cannot see this with the mask on display, only on close-up inspection.
Dimensions: The height is about 7 1/4 inches - and the width is approximately 6 inches. It has an impressed mark on the back: C Ltd / ENGLAND / No. 13.
