This is a scare and hard to find vintage doll. I think that it is a 1940s Norah Wellings issue - but sadly it is lacking a stitched on label. So I am just going to catalogue here as Norah Weillings Style - although the construction of the doll is similar to other labelled example.
.It is in good condition and very quirky and unusual. From the costume - I am assuming that his model is a little circus clown.
Wellings' dolls are usually made entirely of cloth (felt, velvet and velveteen), and represent children and adults, as well as storybook characters. Welling was one of Britain's most celebrated maker of textile dolls. They were made from the 1920s right up to the 1950s. They had hand-painted expressive faces. The Wellings factory was based at the Victoria Toy Works in Wellington, Shropshire. The most popular and easist Wellings dolls to source today are her small souvenir sailor dolls.
She began her career in 1919 working with Chad Valley, one of Britain’s most respected toy manufacturers. By 1926, along with her brother, she had set up her own factory. The company produced fabric dolls for over three decades and the factory closed in 1959 when all production ceased.
Condition: My doll is about 16 inches in height, He is fully made of cloth. He has a strangely painted face which is created as you might find on other Wellings creatures with contours with cloth pulled over it and decorated. He has short brown curly mohair har - and on top a little blue and white felt pointed cap. This goes with the felt ruff around his neck. Mr Clown has a rose pink / peach velvet jacket - edged with blue decorations - and brown textures baggy pants - and blue felt shoes. He has a little moth hole on the side of his face and another on the back of his hand - both not visible when the doll is on display. There are some thinned areas to the velvet fabric on his jacket - but only noticeable on close up inspection. The painting on his face is original with no overpainting. Love he wee ears - I am surprised that these are still there.
This clown doll came to me alongside the Deans Rag Dolls, and the Norah Wellings Turko dolls - and many other stuffed animals - they all date to the late 1930s / 1940s. I cant find another one quite like him - so suspect he is a rare survivor. I have listed at a fair price.
