This is a very stylish and highly sought after minimalist 1940s / 1950s Rosenthal "Tea for Two" set. It consists of the coffee pot, milk jug and open sugar bow. And has two cups and two saucers - perfect for a brew on Sunday morning whilst you read the papers.
It was designed in 1949 by Raymond Loewy (1893-1986) for Continental China, a division of Rosenthal, Germany. The pattern is called Charcoal - relating to the colour of the matt glaze on the exterior of each piece.
As you can see from my photographs - it is a very stylish design and all pieces are in excellent condition.
The wee breakfast set is made of a white porcelain and are glazed in a satin black finish. The flat lids and vessel interiors are a glossy white-glaze.
The teapot is 5 1/2 inches in height and from the spout to handle it is 8 1/2 inches. The lid has a diameter of 3 3/4 inches. The milk jug has a height of 5 1/2 inches and from spout to handle it is 5 inches. The open sugar bowl is 3 inches in height and the diameter at the widest point is 4 inches. Each cup is 2 1/2 inches in height with a diameter of 3 1/2 inches. The saucers are 6 inches wide.
I am pricing up the set as follows: The rarer teapot (you more often see the coffee pot) is £80. The milk jug and sugar bowl is £45. The pair of cups and saucers are £45. This comes to a grand total of £170. The set will not be broken up and sold as seen!
BIOGRAPHY: Raymond Loewy was born in France. He was an industrial designed. He studied first at the University of Paris and then engineering at the Ecole de Lanneau. After serving in the French army during World War One he went to New York. in 1919 he was employed as a window dresser and then as an illustrator. In 1929 he set up his own industrial design office. He designed domestic appliances, locomotives, department stores, and automobiles, especially for Studebaker. In 1949 he founded the Raymond Loewy Corporation to undertake Architectural projects and during the 1960s and 70s he worked as a design consultant to the United States Government. He combined function with aesthetics, streamlining his designs and aware of the effect of aerodynamics. He was a prolific and influential designer and, as a pioneer in his field, he greatly influenced the profile of industrial design.
