This is a fine and collectable Mid-Century Italian Vase. It dates to the 1960s.
It is a piece of vintage art pottery. It covered all over with mottled glazes of petrol blues. mustard yellows and claret reds. They shiny mottled glazes look a little like marblised end-papers that you might find inside of a book. The abstract design is then drawn with incised lines into the vase surface and each shape then filled with more coloured glazes. It must have taken some and and skill to make this piece.
The glaze is almost volcanic in nature and there are some little areas of pitting on the surface of the vase where the glaze would have bubbled and popped in the kilm. This is not damage to the vase - but have occurred in its creation. All the sgraffito decoration has been hand done.
Sgraffito (Italian for "to scratch") and is a decorative techique involving scratching thourgh a top layer of pigment, slip or plaster to reveal a contrasting colour below.
It is unsigned - but the design and decoration is consistent with other pieces produced in Italy at this time.
Dimensions: Height is 10 3/4 inches. The diameter at the widest point is 5 inches. The rim is just over 3 inches. The base is also just over 3 inches.
It will certainly look very stylish in a mid-century interior. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
