This is an attractive decorative bowl by the Swedish glassmaker, Bertil Vallien (b. 1938). It comes from The Galaxy Blue series which was in production up until 1989 and is now discontinued.
These vintage pieces are always sought after and my price for this fine piece is certainly a fair one. It is fully signed on the base, as photographed. The base on this vase is flat and it has no foot. The inscription is on the burnished clear section, as shown.
It is a medium size in the Galaxy bowl range and it looks lovely on display. It is certainly a fine piece for a more minimal "white" themes modernist interior. This size is harder to find than the smaller 58014 model. This is taken into account with my pricing.
My bowl is a round shape. It has satin smooth sides on the exterior - which form random bubbles towards the foot, as photographed. The body of the glass has thin ribbon trails throughout; an inclusion much favoured by Vallien. The trails are slightly raised and appear to have a clear pale blue tint to them. They swirl around the outside of the bowl forming attractive abstract patterns. The decoration also has four blue random dots shapes (criss-crossed with subtle trails) - and a tadpole shaped one towards the base. There seems to a slight gold lustre to the outside of the bowl which is picked up on a sunken rim around the top.
It is in excellent condition with no damage. It is 12 cm (4 3/4 inches in height). The diameter at the widest point is also 16 cm (6 1/4 inches). The rim diameter is 15 cm (6 inches). It is signed on the base: Boda, Artist Col, B Vallien 58015.
