The Victorians were certainly ingenious and inventing things. This is a quirky cast iron inkwell and combined dip pen stand - with slots on the top to hold three different pens.
It is very Aesthetic Movement in style - and dates to around the 1880s. It would look great on a High Victorian desk or office.
The main body section is made of cast iron which is enamelled black - and the sides are incised with a decorative geometric design. It is certainly very decorative - and probably an item for the specialist collector of writing implements - or quirky Victorian.
The ink well section is made of clear glass and takes the form of a snail shell.
The glass snail inkwell is on a pivot and swings forward to allow the pen to be dipped into the ink - and when not in use, it swings back and meets a round metal disk that stops the ink from evaporating or spilling.
The inkstand and glass inkwell are in excellent condition with no damage. You might be hard-pressed to find another in such lovely condition.
