Antique Scandinavian Round Storage Box “Tejne” Decorated Pine, Late 19th Century
This is a rather stunning and very large antique Scandinavian Svepask or Norwegian Tine bentwood box. It is made from pine and the lid has a single carrying handle. It is an antique piece probably dating to the late 19th century - the wood has a nice patina of age. It is made using classic bentwood construction, where thin wooden boards were planed, heated with hot steam, and bent into a circular form. I am not sure if this one originates from Sweden or Norway - but it is certainly a highly collectible example of Nordic vernacular craftsmanship.
It has fine pokerwork or prickwork decoration and has a stitched seam on the wood where it wraps around to form the circular shape of the box. Tines like this were used on Norwegian farms for storing food, sewing supplies, and valuable personal belongings. They were often given as wedding gifts. These boxes are more often oval in shape - so my large round one is much more unusual.
It is another one of these boxes that has come from my own collection - and I have made the difficult decision to list it. I have looked after it well and it is in pretty good condition for its age. I have taken lots of images for your inspection. These were taken out in natural daylight in my garden.
Dimensions: The diameter of the box is 16 inches. The height including the handle is 11 inches. The hight of the main body is 9 inches.
The size of the box and its condition is reflected in my asking price.
Due it the box's size it will have to be sent to you with Parcelforce24. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
