This is a very sweet little dual-section box. It would have been designed to keep postage stamps in and it is hinged down the center with one side for First Class Stamps, and the other for Second Class.
It has a box frame made of gilt metal which is inset with a collection of specimen agates. The lid has two oblong black agates with white inclusions. The edges are faceted and smoothed all around. There are four little decorative ball feet at the corners, as photographed. There are lighter-coloured and more translucent honey-coloured agates around the sides.
It dates to the later 19th century and is probably German in origin.
It is in good condition with no chips or cracks.I have taken lots of images of the box so that you can assess its condition. The hinges of the box are nice and secure and the gilt metal framework of the box is clean but with a patina of age. There is a little inclusion in one of the lighter agate panels on the side. This is not a crack but a little flaw in the stone.
There are nicely engraved details on the metal. It certainly is a lovely old box so the collector of smaller bijouterie or for a stamp collector to keep special stamps inside.
Dimensions: the width is 6 cm and the depth is just under 4 cm and the height is 3 cm.
