This is a large and rather stunning antique Celtic Revival / Glasgow Style Brass Planter. It dates to around 1910s / 1920s.
It is of an exceptional length and quite happily has room to accommodate three large pots inside. It is 23 3/4 inches (just over 60 cm in length). The depth is 6 1/2 inches and the height is also 6 1/2 inches (including the ball feet). The weight of the planter nearly 3 kg - so a very heavy and substantial example.
This planter is certainly an exceptionally long one - as you can see in the images of someone holding it - we have popped three plants into it - so you can see what it might look all planted up in little pots ready to bloom in the springtime.
As you can see from my photographs - it is beautifully made.
The front and back are decorated with a Glasgow School Style knotwork Celtic pattern - often seen on works by Margaret Gilmour. She did not tend to use ball feet on her metalwork planters and this one has no maker's mark. All the same it is certainly a good quality example.
The edge around rim is a wired and turned over one - and this also repeats on the bottom edge - the corners have applied brass straps which are embellished with decorative rivets. On each side there is an applied brass square with a raised disk center - and attached to the panel is a ring handle to make carrying the planter a little easier.
CONDITION. The planter has no dents or dings. The bottom is secure and with no leaking. The base plate has no obvious thinning or the metal or any holes in it. The corners are un- dented and the ball feet are firmly attached and also without issue.
