This antique stoneware jug commemorates the death of General Gordon during the siege of Khartoum in 1885. It has a heavy buff-colored body - which has applied relief decoration in white, brown, and dark green all over, as photographed.
On the front of the jug is a bust-length portrait of General Gordon, probably modelled on the medal of him by William Osborne Lewis, He is shown wearing a fez. There is raised text on the jug, front and back:
This reads: Governor General of the Sudan. 1874 / By the help of God I will hold the balance level / Born Jan 28 1839. The other side reads: Hero of Heroes / Khartoum / I declare to agree that your expectation is for me / Betrayed Jan 26, 1885
On the base, there is the Doulton Lambeth factory stamp, together with the decorator's initials and various model numbers.
The jug is in good antique condition with no chips or cracks - all the raised lettering is intact.
