This is a very rare and unusual little snuff box, and most probably an item for a specialist collector.
It takes the form of a miniature carpenter's plane which opens up with a little compartment inside where you would store your snuff.
It is a wee puzzle box - and you have to lift up the little black section where the handle is. This slides out completely. The lid then swivels around to reveal your snuff contained inside. Indeed, there is still some old original snuff inside - which I have left just now - but might have to remove (due to customs restrictions) if I have to post internationally.
Very cute and hard to find antique box.
As you can see from my photographs - it is in very good antique condition.
The little box dates to the late 19th century or early 20th century.
The wood making up the box is made of pine - and the handle is made of ebony, as is the little faux blade. The little stop at the end is, I think made of mahogany and there is an oak square laid into the lid, in front of the blade decoration.
So a total of four different kinds of wood here.
This is a beautifully crafted little box - and in fabulous condition.
Where will you find another one in such fine condition?
It measures 4 1/2 inches in length; by just over 1 1/2 inches wide - and with an overall height of just under 2 1/2 inches.
