These are a stunning pair of matching Arts and Crafts Candlesticks / Aesthetic Movement Candlesticks, dating to the 1880s / 1890s.
They were made by Benham and Froud, after Christopher Dresser designs. The company was licensed to produce some of Dresser's designs. They are unmarked with the maker's name - but there is no doubt that these are indeed the makers of these fine quality pieces.
This pair has a green baize lining on the base which we have not removed.
These are a larger-sized matching pair, reflected in my price. They are both very substantial.
They are made of copper and brass - so that you get two tones to the metal making up the main body section. The handle is made of ebony or an ebonized hardwood.
The candlesticks have a half-beehive shape base (copper) from which issues the upstand (yellow gold brass) and the holder is made of the same brass colour - with a turned edge for strength. The drip pan is made of copper with organic petal shapes all around. The handle is just so typically Dresser - with it angular form contrasting the more organic shapes on the main candlestick body. The handle on both is secure - and with turned bobbin decoration all along.
Each candlestick measures: 21 cm in height (8 1/4 inches). The diameter of the base is 11 cm (4 1/4 inches). The length of the handle is 12 cm (4 3/4 inches). Each stick weighs 650 grams.
The metal has been polished so the sticks have a nice gleam - but not over-polished to they lose their patina of age. The handles are nice and clean too.
A lovely pair. I have added lots of images to my listing so that you can see the quality and condition easily.
