I am listing three similar antique cast brass pestle and mortar sets in my store. They were probably initially used in a chemist’s shop or by an apothecary to crush down ingredients to be used in pills and potions. Today – these now seem to be popular accessories in the kitchen. The brass is safe to use (as long as you are not regularly crushing up acidic items) and will easily crush up nuts, whole spices, garlic and chillies.
This is a fine antique example with a good bit of weight. It is made of a heavy cast brass.
It is an elegant trumpet shape - with a pleasant flared rim - and two knop or lug handles at each side. There are engraved two parallel decorative rings at the top and at the bottom are four single engraved rings.
The base has engraved concentric circles.
The mortar measures 4 inches in height and with a diameter of 4 inches at the top. The base has a diameter 2 3/4 inches. From handle to handle it is 4 1/4 inches. Unpacked it weighs 800 grams.
The pestle is 5 1/2 inches in length.
It is in good condition - with a nice patina of age, It has no nicks, scratches or dents.
