This is a sweet little late 19th century Staffordshire model. It relates to Burns poem, "Auld Lang Syne". The composition of this model is taken from an illustration of the poem made by John Masey Wright and John Rogers.
The figurine shows three chums sitting at a table in a bar and drinking a toast to times gone by and lifting a large glasses filled from the jug of ale on the table. The table is covered with a plaid cloth. This composition was always a popular one - and it exists in a number of versions and variants. This one probably dates to later in the 19th century - this is reflected in my asking price.
This one is certainly more of a flatback form - and is a smaller size. The modelling and colouring is more naive and not as detailed as earlier versions - but it has a certain charm to it. Flatbacks were made with flat undecorated backs to the figurines. They were designed to stand against a wall on a fireplace or dresser shelf. The lack of decoration on the back (which would not be seen on display) kept prices down and made them affordable items for working-class houses.
Dimensions: Height 6 `1/4 inches. The width is 5 1/4 inches.
My little model would have been perfect in a wee cottage interior - and the subject would have appealed very much to Scottish sentiment.
The flatback is in excellent condition with no damages. The previous owner has covered the base with an oval of green felt so that the ceramic does not scratch your furniture. It can be removed if you wish.
