I have never seen another badge like this before - and I can only assume that this is a very rare car badge dating from the mid-20th century.
I think given its rarity that it might have been produced in very small numbers and the commission for the badges was a specialist one.
The badge is quite large in size - so probably a badge to go on a larger Edinburgh Council official car.
It measures: overall height including fixing bracket: 5 1/4 inches (4 1/4 inches without the bracket). The width is 3 inches.
The design features the historic crest of the City of Edinburgh - with city motto below and in a banner above the word: TRANSPORT. I would assume that this badge would not be attached to the car of an ordinary council employee - but I would imagine a senior executive in the department of transport - or possibly for a chaffeur driven car for the Lord Provost. It is extremely rare - and probably a most sought after badge for the specialist collector of Scottish motoring memorabilia.
No clues to the maker here - as the back is quite plain with no maker's marks or issue numbers.
It is a certainly a beautiful old badge - and like my other harder to find car badges in just lovely condition.
