This is a charming little watercolour by Sir Hugh Casson. It is signed by the artist with his initials HC, lower right and also with the title in his hand along the lower margin.
It is a little watercolour sketch made on his travels to China. It was probably painted on the spot at the Dunhuang Tombs using a little portable watercolour set and pocket sketch book, It is a small work measuring 7 x 9 cm. The frame is 28 x 34 cm.
This is an intimate study by Casson - showing his reaction to the tombs carved into a tall rock wall. He has shown the scale of the site by including little figures at the bottom of the composition. His watercolours are always quick, fluid works and shows his skills as a draughtsman despite having little formal training.
These little travel watercolours by Casson are always very collectable. I have listed mine at a fair price. It will be sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked and Signed for and this will be applied to your order at the checkout.
