This is a very sweet little dual-section box. It would have been designed to keep postage stamps in and it is hinged down the center - with one side for First Class Stamps, and the other for Second Class.
It has a box frame made of gilt metal which is inset with a collection of specimen agates. The lid has two oblong black agates with white inclusions - and the edges are faceted and smoothed all around. There are four little decorative ball feet at the corners, as photographed. There are lighter-coloured and more translucent honey-coloured agates around the sides.
It dates to the later 19th century and is probably German in origin.
It is in good condition with no chips or cracks - I have taken lots of images of the box so that you can assess its condition. The hinges of the box are nice and secure - and the gilt metal framework of the box - is clean but with a patina of age. There is a little inclusion in one of the lighter agate panels on the side - it is not a crack but a little flaw in the stone.
There are nicely engraved details on the metal.
It certainly is a lovely old box - so the collector of smaller bijouterie - or for a stamp collector to keep special stamps inside.
Dimensions: the width is 6 cm and the depth is just under 4 cm and the height is 3 cm.
