This is a very attractive and collectable little stoneware dish.
It has been hand-painted by Carl-Harry Stålhane at Rörstrand. It is signed below with R, three crowns and Handpainted Comp. CHS.
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920-1990) was one of the most renowned Swedish ceramic designers of the 20th century. He is well-known as the artistic leader of Rörstrand in the 1960s. His name is synonymous with high ceramic quality, magnificent creative design and brilliant craftsmanship. Stålhane is represented at the Swedish National Museum of Art and Design and at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He worked for a total of 30 years at Rorstrand.
Initially, he decorated ceramic wares as an assistant for the leading artist Gunnar Nylund. In his first years at Rörstrand, Stålhane learned a lot from Isaac Grûnewald, and they both created a lot of handpainted bowls, vases and plates in the late 1940s. In 1958, Stålhane succeeded Nylund as Artistic Director and Chief Designer at Rörstrand.
Stålhane eventually left Rörstrand in 1973 in order to establish his own ceramic company, Designhuset, in Lidköping, where he further experimented with local clays and minerals. Stålhane continued to work until his death in 1990.
This lovely hand-painted stoneware dish inspired by Swedish Folk Art dates to around 1950. It is a very attractive and popular design.
