I love this huge 1960s / 1970s vase or floor vase by the West German pottery, Dumler & Breiden.
It is model number 488-45
It has the mark on the base for the Dumler and Breiden factory, as photographed.
They were one of West Germany's leading ceramic companies during the 1950s and 60s. They produced a wide range of forms and glazes of good quality, using white clay and their pots often featured quirky styles, glazes and colours. The company closed in 1992.
The height of the vase is 17 3/4 inches (45cm). The diameter is 8 1./2 inches (22 cm_
As you can see from my photographs it has a fabulous abstract pattern and lots of textures. The interior is a glossy black glaze. The exterior neck is a mottle dark peppermint green and black colour. The main body colour is a rich brown - like milk chocolate. and going further down we have the same mottled green glaze, as at the neck section.
I love the addition of the white textured abstract shapes - applied with a texture reminiscent of the textures found on Fat Lava pieces. The raised, crispy textures are a white/ oatmeal shape. These shapes remind me a little of octopus tentacles or random amoeba shapes.
As you can see - not only a very large size of vintage West German pottery - but a most unusual one. It must have been very hard and time-consuming to make this piece. I have never seen another quite like it before.
