This is a sweet wee piece of Mauchline Ware - it is a beautifully made turned fruitwood round-shaped box - which has been used on a Victorian desk to keep stamps etc in.
I have two similar Mauchline boxes with this Hollyrood printed image on the lid. This is the shorter and less tall of my two boxes.
The box is nicely made and has a little vignette of the Holyrood Palace Castle on the lid. Around the side of the box - there is lettering which reads: Grown on the Lands of Abbotsford. This refers to the fruitwood coming from Sir Walter Scott's house at Abbotsford in the Scottish borders. The box is in lovely condition - the wood is a nice rich honey colour. The transfer on the lid is quite large and is in excellent scratch-free condition. The lid of the box twists off.
The lettering referring to this box being made from wood at Abbotsford and the image of the Palace of Holyroodhouse on the lid - it very appropriate as Sir Walter Scott arranged much of the festivities put on for King George IV's visit to Edinburgh in 1822 - including the ceremony of the keys at the Palace.
There is a little very faint inscription on the inside of the lid: it is written long ago and in an old hand.. I think that the surname of the owner might have been "Hogg".

Measurements: The diameter is 7 cm (2 3/4 inches) and the height is 2.5 cm (1 inch).
HISTORY: Mauchline Wares are Scottish wooden items which date from about the 1880s - until the 1900s. They are generally wooden souvenirs and giftware - made of fruitwood and decorated with black transfer designs. The scenes are usually of landmarks and popular towns - and spots favoured by tourists. They were very popular in their day and many pieces were exported globally.
The centre of the Mauchline Ware industry is the small village of Mauchline - which is located 11 miles inland from the Scottish coastal resort of Ayr. At its peak over 400 people were involved in the manufacture of these small (but always beautifully made) wooden souvenirs. Similar products were also made in Lanark - but most of the pieces are known by the generic name of Mauchline Ware.
