I am listing three similar antique cast brass pestle and mortar sets in my store. They were probably initially used in a chemist’s shop or by an apothecary to crush down ingredients to be used in pills and potions. Today – these now seem to be popular accessories in the kitchen. The brass is safe to use (as long as you are not regularly crushing up acidic items) and will easily crush up nuts, whole spices, garlic and chillies.
This is a fine antique example. It is made of a heavy cast brass.
It is an elegant trumpet shape - with a pleasant flared rim - and two flat handles at each side. There are engraved two decorative rings at the top and a raised ring towards the bottom of the mortar.
The base is smooth with no decoration.
The mortar measures 4 inches in height and with a diameter of 4 1/8 inches at the top. The base has a diameter of just over 3 inches. From handle to handle it is 4 3/4 inches. Unpacked it weighs 950 grams.
The pestle is 7 inches in length.
It is in good condition - with a nice patina of age, It has no nicks, scratches or dents. It is certainly not a modern reproduction and has a lot of age to it.
UK Postage would be with Royal Mail Recorded (Small Parcel). This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
