This is a lovely vintage paperweight entitled Sun.
It is an early weight and is dated on the base 1971.
It was designed by Colin Terris and made by Peter Holmes: both have their etched signatures on the base.
It is one of a series of three designs of space-inspired weights - called the third "planets" series. They were sold as a set of three. Other ones in the set included Moon and Pluto.
These planet and space-themed weights were the first-ever sets issued by Caithness and are important items in the history of Caithness weights.
This one is 64 out of a limited edition of only 500 weights.
This third set was fully subscribed - and issued with a ticket price of £40 for the set of four.
They are much sought-after weights - given that they are now over 50 years old. My price for this attractive Uranus one is certainly a fair one.
The weight images what the surface of the planet might look like - with its dark blue ground and blue and white speckled waves on the base surface inside. In the clear dome float three large red glass globules and controlled bubble,
It is in very good condition with no chips or scratches etc.
I have taken lots of images for you to look at all the details in close-up.
In lovely vintage condition with no damages - inscribed with issue numbers to the base etc.
Height is 2 1/4 inches - and with a diameter of 3 inches.
Unpacked it is nearly 550 grams.
Again, this is not such a common weight, and this is reflected in my asking price. It is one of the earliest weights made at Caithness and is certainly of historical interest.
