This is a very rare piece in the Viners Studio tableware range. This is a soup ladle - but could also be used for serving punches etc.
It dates to the 1960s and it is in excellent condition. Nice and shiny with no scratches or marks. As nice an example as you might find.
It is about 11 inches in length.
I have taken lots of images for your inspection and for you to assess the condition.
This piece was designed by Gerald Benney for Viners and the pattern is called Studio. It is meant to resemble an abstract bark pattern - and is always one of Benney's most popular ones.
This is a genuine vintage example, as annotated on the back: VINERS OF SHEFFIELD ENGLAND 18/8 STAINLESS STEEL.
You hardly ever find a soup ladle in this range - and the rarity and condition of it are reflected in my asking price - which is a fair one.
HISTORY: The designer Adrian Gerald Sallis Benney (1930 - 2008) was a celebrated British goldsmith and silversmith. He was born in Hull, Yorkshire and served as the Professor of Silversmithing and Jewellery at the Royal College of Art from 1974 - 1983. He was made a CBE in 1995. During a career spanning more than 50 years, he was the first British craftsman to hold four Royal Warrants simultaneously. His work has had a major impact on the survival of domestic silver in Britain.
In his early years, Benney was influenced by the purity and minimalism of Scandinavian design. From 1957 to 1969 he designed stainless steel cutlery for Viners. His most popular design was "Studio" and the design remains popular to this day.
Certainly one of Britain's most interesting 20th-century designers.
