This is a very fine large and much rarer pair of Staffordshire figurines.
They are a large size: measuring about 12 1/4 inches in height; 9 inches wide and with a depth of 3 inches.
The pair show the Royal Couple out for a horseback ride. One shows The Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII) and the other is his young wife, Alexandra of Denmark (annotated on the figure: Princess).
She married Edward in 1863 - so these figures must date to the mid-late 1860s. She was Princess of Wales from 1863 to 1901, the longest anyone has ever held that title. She was a popular figure and her style of dress and bearing were copied by fashion-conscious women in Victorian Britain. She enjoyed many social activities, including dancing and ice-skating, and was an expert horsewoman and tandem driver.
After she married the Prince of Wales in 1863, a new park and "People's Palace", a public exhibition and arts centre under construction in north London, were renamed the Alexandra Palace and Park to commemorate her.
These two figures are in remarkable condition and are much more unusual and desirable due to the fabulous polychrome enamels colouring applied to the models. They are certainly stunning pieces and would be fabulous items to pop onto a fireplace in a Victorian sitting room.
I also have a single figure of the Prince of Wales - without the beautiful colouring available in my store - interesting to compare the two of these.
As you can see in my photographs, they are beautifully modelled.
The horse's legs are very fine indeed - and I can't believe that this delicate figurine has survived about 140 years with no damages.
These are both genuine antique examples - and certainly not reproduction pieces
The figurines are in the most excellent antique condition - with no chips, cracks or any restorations. The fine legs of the horses are intact and with no damages. I have attached oodles of images for your inspection.
I love these two figures - it has been hard for me to list them - as I certainly am very tempted to keep them.
Due to the weight - we shall have to send them with Parcelforce48 - but they will be carefully packed.
