his is a rare vintage paperweight made at Caithness Glass.
The design of this one does not seem to be documented - and it is probably a very early creation. There is lots to wear to the base (as photographed) where the weight has been picked up and down for many years. Obviously, the cute little mouse inside was irresistible for closer inspection.
There are no editioning details - no title etc on the base - just a little etched inscription: CHG (for Caithness Glass). I am assuming that this one dates to some time in the 1970s. I have been unable to find another one exactly like this one - not sure if it was a prototype or an experimental piece.
There seems to be a later version of this weight called Hickory Dickory Dock which dates to 1997 (limited edition of 100) and is different in a lot of details including the frosted exterior with furniture acid etched into the surface.
If anyone has anything to add about my own little mouse weight I would be interested in knowing more about its history.
My wee mouse paperweight is egg-shaped the back is clear and not frosted - he seems to be made up of slivers of glass placed to look more three-dimensional. The glass on the base is made up of coloured abstract shapes - all slightly unresolved - to me it looks like the wee mouse has clambered out a hole in a lump of cheese and is having a wee feast!
CONDITION. With lots of wear to the base, as photographed. Otherwise pretty good vintage condition. There is sadly a tiny fleabite and fine scratch to the viewing window to the right-hand edge about three-quarters of the way up and I have photographed this it is very minor (see last three photos on my listing) - but is not a happy wee loss! I have priced this weight to take this into account. These issues are not readily noticeable with the weight on display.
