This is an original Christmas Greetings Card that I am listing in my shop which was designed and printed by Robin Philipson (1916 – 1992).
Every year he would create a personal lithographic Christmas card and print these at the print room at the Edinburgh College of Art.
Philipson produced these cards from 1964 right up until 1991.
This one dates to the 1980s (1983?) and it is a quirky image showing a Santa Claus on horseback. There is a big red abstract shape to the right-hand side - which might be a stained glass window - Philipson often added these large Rose windows to his composition. The back section of the original Christmas card is missing - so the card is not signed - I have other signed and inscribed ones by Philipson and his family in my online shop (obviously a little more expensive). But this original lithographic card by the artist is all newly framed and ready to hang on your wall - it is certainly listed at a very fair price.
Dimensions: image size is 25 x 15.5 cm . The frame is 34 x 23.5 cm
Robin Philipson was born in 1916 in Broughton-in-Furness. He moved to Scotland in 1930, and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1936 to 1940, becoming a lecturer there in 1947.
He was a significant and influential presence in the Scottish art scene for more than three decades. He is particularly renowned for his cockfight paintings, a series that began in the early 1950s. His later work in the 1960s explored more general figurative studies plus church and cathedral interiors and crucifixions.
Prestigious appointments included being Head of School of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, and later President of the Royal Scottish Academy. He received many honours throughout his life including being knighted for service to the arts in Scotland in 1976.
This card has been newly mounted and professionally framed ready for display on your wall. It is in pristine vintage condition. This card is a genuine Philipson vintage card - but sadly it has not been signed by him on the back. This is reflected in my asking price.
It will be sent to you in the UK with Royal Mail Recorded Delivery. This will be applied to your order at the check out.
