This is a rare early still-life screenprint by the Scottish artist, Bel Cowie.
It is entitled "Enclosed", and is signed and dated May 1975.
The title is probably a play on words - the little floral canes in the paperweight are enclosed in a clear glass dome - and the bouquet of flowers is also enclosed in a large antique Victorian glass dome -that was used to keep dust off items on display in a sitting room.
The artist has used a selection of browns and rust coloured shades - with touches of pales blues and dirty pinks - all shades very popular in interiors in the mid-1970s. Colours which often appeared in Biba posters from this time.
The dark tones were quite difficult to photograph and the glass had a tendency to be rather reflective - so please note that there are no white marks etc on the screenprint - these are probably reflections from the glass.
The screenprint is a signed artist's proof and probably a trial impression for a very small limited edition.
It is numbered bottom left: A/P, with the title in the centre and to the right - is the artist's signature, all as photographed.
Dimensions: The image size is 53 x 41 cm. The frame size is 68 x 55 cm
Bel Cowie was born in 1943 in Dundee. She was a painter in oil but is probably best known for her screenprints. Cowie trained at Gray's School of Art and Ceramische Fachschule, Berne.
Her work often reveals her fascination with Japanese prints and weaving designs. There is always a gentle delicacy in her work.
Bel Cowie exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh between 1974 and 1982. Examples of her work are in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum.
She died suddenly in tragic circumstances in 1983 at the early age of 40.
Works by her are now very hard to find.
Condition - it is in excellent condition with no condition problems.
This most attractive work by Cowie is being sold framed. The mount and frame appear to be the original vintage 1970s ones. The mount is a chocolate brown shade and it picks out some of the colours used in the screenprint - and the frame surround is a thick plain black wood - which goes with the dark tones in the print's background. It is nice and clean and all ready to just hang on your wall.
The framed print will be sent to you with Parcelforce48 - signed and recorded post. I will cap postage at £10 and this will be applied to your order at the checkout stage. There is FREE local delivery in the Edinburgh area.
