This is a very fine hand-painted piece of early 20th century Bough pottery.
This is an attractive hand-painted posy bowl. It has been decorated by Richard Amour, as initialed on the base. And painted inscription Bough.
It is a bowl with a more unusual shape. It has a deep central reservoir - which is painted the usual rich claret colour that was much favoured by Richard Amour - and liberally painted a warm peppermint inside. The dish has a wide rim (as photographed) with concentric ridges around. The background is a grey-wash with brown beech leaves with blue stems.
Again, dating to about the 1930s - and in excellent condition for its age.
The glaze has a bit of crazing to it. You don't see it at all on the highly coloured areas - but as you commonly find with these pieces - more evident on unpainted areas.
The overall diameter of the bowl is 6 1/2 inches and has a height of 2 1/2 inches. The inside "pot" sections is 3 1/4 inches in diameter.
Bough Pottery was founded by Elizabeth Amour in the 1920s. They specialized in decorating blanks - which they bought in from pottery companies in England and Scotland (many from Maling Pottery, Newcastle).
This fine bowl was made by Elizabeth's brother, Richard. He lived from 1900 to 1949.
Interest in Bough pottery has been of particular interest of late -and my asking price here reflects this renewed interest in the pottery.
