This is a highly decorative piece of Scottish Art Pottery. It probably dates to the 1920s or 1930s. It is decorated by one of the Scottish Lady Decorators or Painters.
At this time, local Scottish potteries in Glasgow and ones in Edinburgh such as Bough or Makmerry engaged ladies to hand decorate blank pieces made by larger factories or firms. The blanks are not usually marked but you often find the monogram or name of the lady artist painted on the base. Here we have an almost illegible mark - which I have photographed for you.
This is certainly a very beautiful antique Scottish pottery ceramic drinking quaich. The decoration is just glorious with two strange entwined Celtic sea creatures. They look very strange. The colours are nice and vibrant - with the background liberally painted in blue - and the animals picked out in yellow and brown shades. The exterior of the quaich is a very faint pale yellow to the bottom, has three parallel brown lines around the top section and the exterior rim is the same shade as the interior.
The dish is in lovely antique condition. There are no chips or cracks and the pair of handles have never been restored etc.
Dimensions: handle to handle - the quaich is 7 3/4 inches. The diameter is 5 3/4 inches. The height is 2 1/4 inches.
I have taken a few images for your inspection. It is a unique piece of old Scottish Art Pottery - very functional, with fine hand-painted decoration and in excellent condition. My asking price is certainly a fair one - you won't find another like it.
