This is a sweet and harder to find pair of little Staffordshire pottery cats - like the more usual dog examples - these were made to sit on either end of a mantlepiece in a little cottage.
The are made from moulds and you can the join of the seam on the side of each cat where each moulded side has been joined together. This is how these were made at these date. They are not made later where the pottery would have been slip cast in one piece from the mould and would be much lighter in weight.
There are air holes on the back of each cat - to prevent the models from exploding when put into a firing kiln.
The decoration on his pair is quite simple and naive. There are black spongeware dabs on each cat. They have moulded bows which were painted blue and glazed. They have painted faces. They are a matched pair.
Both my cats are in good antique condition with no nasty chips or cracks. There is no disfiguring crazing to the glaze. They look good on display. The base of one has some marks to the unglazed clay - this has happened in the kiln and is often found on genuine older figurines, as photographed.
Dimensions: The cats are 20 cm (8 inches) from base to ear tip. The width is 12.5 cm (5 inches) and the depth is 9.5 cm (3 3/4 inches).
