This is one of the late 20th century's classic pieces of design. The squeezer ("Juicy Salif") was designed by Philippe Starck in 1990. A Calamari Squid inspired the exotic-looking shape; the original drawings were quickly sketched onto a pizza-stained paper placemat.
The squeezer features in the permanent collection of MOMA, and the Met in New York, as well as the V&A in London.
It is perhaps more of a sculptural display piece than a functional item that you could use all the time. The acids in the fruits tend to have a negative effect on the condition of the metal. It is also not dishwasher-friendly and needs to be washed by hand. I don't think that Starck ever intended this item to be functional thing, and he has publicly stated it was "not meant to squeeze lemons" but "to start conversations".
This squeezer is a great display piece - and in excellent condition. It is lovely and shiny and is marked: ALESSI, as photographed
