This is a strange set of Dutch sgraffito stoneware coffee cups by Hannie Mein (1933-2003).
There are four cups in total - each marked to the base, as photographed.
They each have a strange creature incised into the front of each cup.
We have a butterfly; a bee or a winged insect. a fish and possibly a strange bird (peacock).
They are all in excellent vintage condition.
Each cup measures: 6 cm in height. They have a diameter of 7.5 cm - and from rim to the opposite handle end is 11 cm.
It comes with a carved wooden mug rack - which would go onto your wall - and your cups would sit on the wooden pegs.
The wooden peg section measures 90 cm in length by 14 cm
BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS: Johanna Greta (Hannie Mein), a Dutch ceramist (1933-2003). She was born in Utrecht and started working as a potter after leaving High School.
In Amsterdam, she started her own studio together with Freek Noppen, whom she married in 1963. In 1969 they moved to the Frisian Vinkega, where Mein had her studio and exhibition space in their farmhouse, known as "the Bakehouse."
Her husband took care of the business section, and Mein produced the pottery. Her work has been recognized by its charm and naive style, often with stylized animal figures, such as those that appear on my coffee cups. In 2003, the Nationaal Vlechtmuseum in Noordwolde held a retrospective of her work. The exhibition was organized by Mein, but sadly she did not live to see the opening. She had died a week before.
My cups are typical of her work dating from the late 1960s / early 1970s. They are all in good vintage condition with no issues. These pieces are starting to attract a lot of interest from vintage collectors. They are sold with the old carved wooden hanging stand which came to me with the cups.
I could post the cups on their own for £4.95 - it will be about £10 to post with the wall stand - due to its long length. It will have to go with Parcelforce48.
