This is a lovely early piece of Mdina Glass.

It takes the form of a chunky glass bowl which subtle vertical stripes of clear drab greens and pale kingfisher blues. These stripes make up the Mdina pattern: Ming.

The use of two contrasting colours of ribbon glass looks especially good if the vase is displayed with a darker background to exaggerate the stripes. To me, the pattern looks a little like the ripples of sand you might find on a beach - which are washed with a shallow tide of blue waves.

The Mdina Glass factory was founded in Malta in 1969 by Michael Harris (1933 – 94). He was inspired by the scenery on the island, and the colours used in the glass reflect the sun, sea, and sand of the landscape. In 1972, he left Malta to set up the Isle of Wight Glass factory, back in England.

Since 1981 the Mdina factory has been run by Joseph Said, one of Harris' original apprentices. Pieces from the early Mdina years are highly desirable, particularly those signed by Michael Harris himself.

My lovely bowl is most probably an earlier issue. It is simply signed on the base: Mdina.

A beautiful hand blow example with little foot to the base (as photographed). It is listed at a fair price. These Mdina bowls are getting now so much harder to find.

In good vintage condition - with no chips, cracks or damages. No scratches to the interior. A nice larger size - the diameter is 5 1/4 inches and the height is about 3 3/4 inches. Weight unpacked is 800 grams.

The bowl will be carefully packed and sent to you with Royal Mail Tracked post. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
