This is another fine work in my Iconic Edinburgh online store by the celebrated Scottish artist, Edward Gage (1925 - 2000).
He was widely known in Scotland as an artist, and also worked as an art critic for "The Scotsman" newspaper. Gage also produced illustrations for a number of publications, including the "Radio Times".
He was born in Gullane, East Lothian in 1925 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.
Sadly, his artistic career was cut short for a time, when he joined the Scots Guards in 1941 and then in the Royal Scots Regiment. He served as a staff officer in India and Malaya from 1945 - 1947.
He returned to Edinburgh to complete his studies and in 1950 was awarded a travelling scholarship to Mallorca, Spain - where he befriended the poet, Robert Graves.
Gage had ten one-man exhibitions between 1964 and 1986, besides contributing paintings to group exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, and elsewhere.
He taught at Fettes College, Napier College, and at Edinburgh College of Art.
From 1960 to 1964 he was President of the Scottish Society of Artists - and in 1992 he was made an MBE for services to Scottish Art.
He died in 2000, aged 74.
Examples of this work are in the National Galleries of Scotland (12 works) and the collection of the City of Edinburgh Council.
This is a bold and loosely painted watercolour by Gage - it is a riot of colour. It is unsigned but the label on the back gives the attribution to Gage and states that it was exhibited at the prestigious Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh (when they were located at Castle Street) as part of their "Recent Paintings" show in June 1979. It was No. 52 in their exhibition catalogue.
The image shows a couple on an exotic landscape (probably in Sardinia, where Gage travelled to in June 1979; the date of this artwork) - to the left hand side is a large leafy palm tree silhouetted against a tropical sky. In the centre of the composition a young man and lady face each other - they are having a moonlight romantic tryst. It is night time and a crescent moon is seen in the sky above - the light illuminates the scene in strange colours.
This vibrant watercolour is being sold with a fresh acid-free window mount but in its original frame. It is on offer for a very fair price - for this interesting Scottish artist. The frame is a simple dull gold coloured one - chosen by the artist for the exhibition. It is an attractive Scottish artwork - and would look fantastic in a modern contemporary interior.
We removed the watercolour from the frame before sending to our frameres to get a new mount put on it - and to check for any condition problems. It is not signed on the back - but there are some little doodles or colour tests on the margins of the sheet on the reverse. I have photographed these for your inspection.

There is currently a growing interest in Scottish artists of the Edinburgh School working in the 1940s - 70s, and Edward Gage is certainly an artist and name to conjure with - and there is at present a much-renewed interest in his work in the salerooms and market.
