(Thomas) Edwin La Dell was born in Rotherham in 1914. He started off his artistic career studying at Sheffield School of Art. In 1935, he won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art under the tutelage of John Nash. He served as the Head of the Department of Lithography here from 1948 until his early death in 1970.
La Dell was elected to the Royal Academy of Art in 1969. He was a much respected and sought-after British printmaker.
His best-known works are those from the post-war era, in particular the lithographs he created for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth as part of the School Prints Scheme, those for Lyons Tea Rooms, and his own series of views of Oxford, Cambridge, Kent, and New York.
This is a charming and highly sought-after lithograph by La Dell. It shows the interior of a conservatory. There is an orange chair to the left - with a large potted American Starthistle plant sitting on it. Behind are the framed windows of the conservatory and a lush garden beyond. The conservatory is almost jungle like with a profusion of plants growing inside. It is such a fabulous image - and a great one for your interior if you are a keen gardener. It dates to late 1960s when La Dell was making a series of limieted edition prints featuring images of plants in conservatories.
This proof impression has a pencil inscription below: Centaurea Americana. There is also an black and white etching with this title by La Dell showing the chair in a different direction and in close-up. My large lithograph dates to 1967. It comes from the Garden Series", produced in collaboration with the publisher Editions Alecto.
The print is pencil signed by the artist, and inscribed along the bottom margin, as photographed. I have taken lots of images for your inspection.
Impressions of this vintage print are certainly harder to find: my asking price is certainly a very fair one. This is an artist's proof.
A nice large and dramatic print. It is being sold unframed - but with a new conservation friendly, acid-free mount and backing board - these were made by a professional art framer. My print is all ready for you to frame up.
Dimensions: The mount is 74 x 57 cm. The image size is 56 x 38 cm. It is in lovely condition with fresh colours. The sheet has not been laid down at any point in the past and it is printed on a good heavy sheet of paper.
UK Posting Only. This large print will be very carefully packed and sent with Parcelforce24 - it will be about £20 to post. This will be fully insured against loss or damage in transit and applied at check-out. FREE DELIVERY WOULD APPLY IN THE EDINBURGH AREA.
